2017 Chardonnay

Monterey County

This 2017 Monterey County Chardonnay is showing lots of crisp golden delicious apples with overtones of pear and pineapple.  It follows through on the mid palate with a creaminess often associated with fine Champagne, and finishes with butterscotch and vanilla due to the completion of M-L and the use of French oak.

2016 Pinot Noir

Santa Cruz Mountains

The 2016 Santa Cruz Pinot Noir is a blend of three vineyards: 50% Regan Vineyard located in the cool region of Corralitos, 25% from the Black Ridge Vineyard located near Los Gatos on Hwy 17 opposite the Lexington Reservoir and 25% Miller Hill Vineyard located near Summit Road. The Regan and Miller Hill contributes the bright black cherry and strawberry nose, while the Black Ridge contributes the earthier tones, structure and darker fruits. It was aged in in very tight grained Hungarian oak for 19 months. The oak component is very subtle, showing hints of cinnamon and vanilla.

2013 Pinot Noir

Ballard Family Reserve

This wine is a blend of several vineyards: 14% Estate, which offers lush black cherry fruit, 29% Regan – red cherry and earth notes, 14% Coast Grade – Floral complexity, 14% Tondre’ from the Santa Lucia Highlands to add an extra layer of fruity complexity, and 29% from the Muns vineyard, the main contributor of the flinty minerality notes this wine offers up. This is our second offering of this Santa Cruz mountain pinot blend utilizing the same vineyards as the previous year. The aromatics are very complex: black cherries, black berries, mineral, and floral notes are dominant. The palate carries these same attributes and offers up a silky-smooth structure that incorporates soft tannins, and balanced acidity. The wine finishes with pleasing oak spice notes of nutmeg and cinnamon.

2011 Syrah

Insider's Club - Coast View Vineyard

The Insider’s Syrah is made from the same lot of grapes that goes into making the syrah port; and because of the removal of the juice mid-way through fermentation, it has an ”intensifying” effect  on the remaining wine.

The 2011 shows a wonderful depth of fruit; ranging from strawberries to cassis and blackberries to blueberries. The absence of any brand new oak allows this wonderful fruit to shine through the natural spiciness of white pepper, cedar and allspice.

2010 Zinfandel

Estate *100 Year Anniversary*

Our Estate Zinfandel vineyard was planted in 1910 marking this vintage its centennial anniversary. It is a beautiful example of the classic old-vine, head pruned, dry farmed Zinfandel vineyard, and one of the few that have survived in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Gorgeous raspberries and black pepper spice. This is what Zinfandel should smell and taste like. The aromas explode out of the glass and keep you coming back for more, and the depth of flavors seem fathomless. The 2010 vintage is more refined in style to previous vintages, with moderate (For zinfandel) alcohol at 14.4% and a classic claret style structure of balanced acidity and tannins.

2008 Pinot Noir

Estate Vineyard

The estate pinot occupies a solitary single acre on the steepest part of the estate vineyard.

The soil is composed of decomposed sandstone and is well drained. The clone is entirely 667 which is noted for its good color and small berry size, especially when planted on steep slopes.

The 667 clone was chosen for its balanced structure and wonderful black cherry fruit, it is one of the few pinot clones that can stand on its own merit, most others that I have worked with need a little help with blending from other clones. The pinot is cane pruned and trellised to maximize quality and because it is planted on a steep slope, all of the farming has to be done by hand. Definitely a labor of love!

Opulent ripe black cherry fruit intermingled with cinnamon and vanilla oak spices. Hints of earth and sweet tobacco drift in and out as the wine opens up. This 2008 vintage  has a rich mouth-feel with showy velvety tannins that give way to an interesting inter-play of black cherry fruit and minerality on the finish.

2008 Syrah

Coastview Vineyard

For such a young vineyard to produce this kind of consistency year after year is a testament to John’s vision to locate the vineyard high up in Chualar Canyon.  This 2008 Syrah offers up classic Rhone aromas of blueberries, cassis and black berries. As always the mouth-feel is velvety, showing off the soft tannins that can easily get out of hand in this particular variety. The plush fruit explodes on the palate and lingers for an eternity; such is the amazing depth of fruit this wine brings.
