The 2004 is our first ever release of a tawny port. It is essentially the same base wine as the 2004 Ruby port, but kept in barrel for another 9 years.
It is made from the wonderful Syrah grapes from the Coast View Vineyard which has always impressed me with its magnificent depth of blueberry and black current fruit. The structure of this wine is immense, one of the inkiest wines I have ever made, and it is this combination that makes it ideal for a port candidate. While young, there is a lot of the obvious fruit and alcohol, but only 3 years later it has developed into the gorgeous ruby port that the club members know so well. Every year however, I retain a few barrels in reserve for the tawny port; and now after 11 years in barrel our patience has paid off and we are more than pleased to share it with you. You will notice that the Tawny is lighter in colour than the ruby due to the long term aging, but it is so much more aromatic: Tobacco, forest floor, earthiness and the wonderful nutty flavours burst out across the entire palate. Even though it is a big wine, it is also elegant and balanced.
I hope you enjoy this special treat as much as I enjoyed making it.
