The Estate Chardonnay is planted to the rare and difficult to cltivate Mt. Eden clone. This plant material, brought by Paul Masson from Burgundy's Corton-Charlemagne and shipped around the Horn to San Francisco in the 1860's, turned out to be important beyond its source. Little did Masson know that he was preserving the world's only example of pre-phylloxera Corton-Charlemagne. The original vineyard in France died out long ago.
Only 94 cases were made from the Estate vineyard in 2011, but the silver lining is that it is absolutely fabulous. Plenty fo juicy tropical fruit with layers of melon and apples jump out of the glass, and the crips acidity and creamy mid palate, blends will with the tropical characters and subtle oak spices.
