In 1892, French immigrant Pierre Pourroy (after whom our Syrah-Zinfandel blend “Pierre’s Ghost” is named) established the winery high above the Santa Clara Valley (today better known as Silicon Valley). Hidden on a plateau oasis in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, (fifty miles south of San Francisco, & 4 miles above Saratoga and Los Gatos), the estate sits on 58 acres. Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay are all farmed at the Estate site. The Zinfandel plantings date back to 1910, and the Cabernet Franc plantings - California's oldest - date back to 1920. The Estate Chardonnay is planted to the rare and difficult to cultivate Mt. Eden clone. This plant material, brought by Paul Masson from Burgundy’s Corton-Charlemagne and shipped around the Horn to San Francisco in the 1860’s turned out to be important beyond its source. Little did Masson know that he was preserving the world’s only example of pre-phylloxera Corton- Charlemagne. The original vineyard, in France, died out long ago. Our Estate Pinot Noir, grows on the sloping hill, high above the tasting room and crush pad and reigns down from its elevated position as if supervising the whole operation.

Michael and Kellie Ballard purchased the property in 1996, naming it after their two daughters, believing it a living tribute to the wine industry’s family heritage and the best icon for their family winery operation Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards pledges always to bottle wine that honors their family and to bottle wine that you can be proud to share with your own.

Savannah-Chanelle produces in the range of eight to ten thousand cases annually, with over 80 percent dedicated to Pinot Noir, the winery's raison d'ętre. Michael Ballard and Winemaker Tony Craig (former head winemaker of David Bruce Winery) have joined forces based on their mutual passion for making Pinot Noir wines. Tony continues to produce our small lot, limited Estate wines as well as our wonderful “Coast View” Syrah made from a small, single vineyard site located high in the Gavilian Mountain range above Monterey, California.

Conveniently located only 3.3 miles from the Village of Saratoga, this working winery is close to Silicon Valley but worlds away from the everyday business environment.
