VINEYARD NOTES: The estate pinot occupies a solitary single acre on the steepest part of the estate vineyard. The soil is composed of decomposed sandstone and is well drained. The clone is entirely 667 which is noted for its good color and small berry size, especially when planted on steep slopes.
The 667 clone was chosen for its balanced structure and wonderful black cherry fruit, it is one of the few pinot clones that can stand on its own merit, most others that I have worked with need a little help with blending from other clones. The pinot is cane pruned and trellised to maximize quality and because it is planted on a steep slope, all of the farming has to be done by hand. Definitely a labor of love!
TASTING NOTES: This 2012 offering from the estate pinot vineyard offers up a complex array of classic black cherry pinot fruit with notes of smoke, toast and cinnamon spice. The palate mirrors those characteristics and adds a layer of leather and nutmeg into the mix. It is an elegant wine with balanced acidity and supple tannins and finishes with sweet red cherries and the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA mineral signature.
